Worst Dressed at MTV Movie Awards 2011

As with the red carpet at any award show, we have our best, and we have our worst. We’re blown away at the fantastic stylistic choices of rising starlets such as Lily Collins, Selena Gomez, and Leighton Meester. We’re also equally shocked at the ensembles worn by other celebutantes including Nicki Minaj  and Jessica Szohr, but our extreme reactions are definitely not positive. No, instead we struggle to believe how anyone can wear mismatched Louboutins, too-tight bustiers, and crazy colored jumpsuits while attempting to be fashionable! Below are our Top 5 nominees for the ‘Worst Dressed’ category at last night’s MTV Movie awards:

1.       1. Nicki Minaj gave us no surprise as she stepped  out onto the red carpet and into the limelight. Her wardrobe was tacky as ever, but this time, it was almost uncomfortable to look at! The singer’s bustier corset top was far too tight and it unveiled an insane amount of cleavage, while hardly matching her green army-inspired cargos. The TomTom statement necklace was pure Minaj, and as always, she tops our ‘Worst Dressed’ list!

2.       2. Gossip Girl Blake Lively may have a history of being the ‘Belle of the Ball’ at red carpet events, but it seems that even royalty can fall from their throne every now and then. For the evnt, Blake paired an electric blue Michael Kors dress with dark purple Christian Louboutin pumps by. Although they’re both spectacular pieces, the two seemed to be competing with each other, and ultimately drowned out Blake’s sophisticated efforts.

3.       3. Former Gossip Girl starlet Jessica Szohr opted for a more casual look, telling MTV, “This is summery, flowy, I feel very comfortable.” She paired a wide-leg Alice + Olivia jumpsuit with Chris Benz heels. We love the heels, but Jessica simply isn’t tall enough to pull of the wide-leg look! Also, the jumpsuit’s print was far too loud for Jessica’s petite figure.

4.       4. Twilight's Elizabeth Reaser attempted a much sexier look than her typical choice of dress. She chose a plunging black mini dress, which may have looked attractive if she went up a size or two. It was far too tight, and made the thin actress look chubby! She later told MTV “I work with stylists. I can’t pick things out!” Hmm, no surprise there.

5.       5. Amanda Bynes paired a tight beige Herve Leger mini dress with aqua Christian Louboutin fringe heels and a Chanel clutch. While we typically love the Nickelodeon alum’s elegant but fun style, we’re left wondering what went wrong. The dress is far too tight, and makes her look like she’s gained weight during her long absence from the silver screen. We’re also struggling to understand how Bynes managed to find the only ugly pair of Louboutins in the universe- we weren’t sure such a thing existed! On a positive note, we love the added elegance from the Chanel clutch.

Blake's New 'Do

As many of you know, Blake Lively isn't exactly my favorite actress in Hollywood. Actually, I find her pretty annoying, and I much prefer Leighton Meester, who is far more talented and beautiful. But somehow, I find myself caring an awful lot about her life and career.

Anyways, Blake's new hair was unveiled on Wednesday at the Time 100 Most Influential People Party, when she stepped out in a green Zuhair Murad gown and long, flowing red locks. It was extremely unexpected, but I'm not quite sure if I hate it. I mean, Blake certainly doesn't have perfect features, but she was able to hide behind the long, blonde hair. And now, its gone.

So, the question remains: Why did Blake dye her hair RED?!

"It's for the film 'Hick,' " she told People, which stars Alec Baldwin, Chloe Moretz, and Rory Culkin. "I thought [my character] needed red hair. It helps when you're playing a role, when I don't feel like myself. And I don't really feel like myself with red hair. I love it- I feel like Ariel."

Chanel vs. Blake Lively

Will Blake Keep Her Spot As The Face Of Chanel, Or Will The Execs Get Their Way And Be Rid Of Lively?

Remember a few months ago when Blake Lively became the official “It” girl of Hollywood? Not only was she the reigning Queen of the Upper East Side, but she was on the cover of Allure, Marie Claire, Vanity Fair, and literally every other glamorous high fashion magazine. She was also awarded not one, not two, but three Vogue covers, and became BFF’s with Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour practically overnight. But perhaps her biggest claim to fame was the announcement that Blake herself would be the face of Chanel Mademoiselle Handbags this Spring. (Did we mention that her biggest fan is none other than Karl Lagerfeld?!)

Well, that was then, and this is now. Blake’s Chanel ads are first beginning to appear (Check out the new Vogue!) in our favorite glossies, and although she looks glamorous as ever (Then again, how could something photographed by Lagerfeld himself not look glamorous?!), her role as a spokes model for the French fashion house is met with little enthusiasm.

America as a whole still loves Blake, but it seems that’s the problem- Chanel execs hate her overall American look, penning it as too wholesome and “off-brand”. In other words, Blake’s contemporary beauty isn’t quite in sync with Chanel USA’s ongoing attempts to identify it’s styles with the height of Parisian sophistication.

In the end, it seems the cited “internal grumblings” won’t hurt Lively’s newfound success. Karl Lagerfeld seems to love the breath of fresh air she’s bringing to the company. "She's a kind of American dream girl," he told WWD. "It was an easy job because everyone fell in love with her."

Blake Lively For Chanel

The Long-Awaited Ad Campaign Won't Be In Magazines Until April, But We're Giving A First Look!

Blake Lively first captured America's hearts as Bridget in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants back in 2005. Two years later, she became known to the world as Serena Van Der Woodsen, the beautiful, exciting, wealthy, and overall perfect Queen of the Upper East Side.

Since then, Blake's role has become her reality, and she has gone on to be the covergirl for Cosmogirl, Teen Vogue, Nylon, Lucky, Seventeen, Vanity Fair, Cosmopolitan, Allure, and most notably, Vogue. Consistently dressed in the most stylish clothes from the hottest designers, Blake has become a style icon. She's the inspiration for both Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld, earning her three Vogue covers as well as her newest accomplishment, spokesmodel for Chanel Handbags for Spring 2011. Here's a sneak peek of the ad (above) which won't hit magazine stands until April. It was shot by Karl Lagerfeld himself!

Mother of Costume Pearl

Take A Nod From Old Hollywood Glamour This Spring!

Whether they're real or fake, pearls are always in style. Their classic look is associated with sophistication, grace, and feminine charm. The moment a pearl necklace is added to an outfit, it is transformed from a few paired separates, to a beautifully polished ensemble. This holds true more than anywhere in Washington DC, where the idea of style is tailored and polished.

Although it is always preferred to wear the real thing rather than a knockoff, pearls are becoming an exception. The economy is continuing to take a toll on our stylistic choices, making real pearls a little out of reach for most. In the past, it was socially unacceptable to wear fake pearls over the age of 14, but now, it is becoming more and more accepted. The main reason for this exception is that fake pearls look so much like the real thing, it is almost impossible to notice the difference without being up close.

This Spring, costume pearls will be seen on everyone from Chanel models to Blake Lively, and they will definitely not be considered tacky! In fact, costume pearls help recreate the image of old Hollywood glamour- just think Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's! Costume pearls will be seen on every imaginable accessory- purses, watches, rings, earrings, and necklaces. (Check out this necklace from Banana Republic!) Embrace the "piled-on" look- you'll look glamorous without breaking your wallet!

A Bar Stool Review of THE PRIVATE LIVES OF PIPPA LEE

i Regret That She Had But One Life To Give

Ramblings: The Lives Of Pippa Lee's Privates (Porn Title)

Final Proof: 1½ Shots

You know how sometimes you drink with chicks and there's this one babe who's pretty enough and she starts talking about her life and makes you believe she's had this wild existence because she believes it so much? So you buy her another Cosmopolitan (and that shoulda been your first sign) and she reveals all these deep, dark secrets and you feel a little tenderness at the beginning because it's cute how she thinks these episodes from her life are so fascinating even if they're more common than beer rings on paper coasters but after a while you start to tire of her going on and on about her 'insane multiple lives' when you've lived more most weekends. That's kinda what The Private Lives of Pippa Lee is like.

You know me and how sensitive i am, right? i feel kind of bad about trashing this movie because the book and screenplay were written by the director, Rebecca Miller, which means it's pro'lly autobiographical. Look, 'Becca (can i call you 'Becca?) i'm not knocking your life. i'm glad you've enjoyed so much success telling people about it but, babe, there's only one 'life' here and there isn't much living in that one.

Plus, i hate Keanu Reeves. Always have. He can't act. He could fake it in Matrix because Neo is a character who has the personality of someone who doesn't know how to act. But man, Keanu in a real movie? Makes you wish you had a case of whatever Kenneth Branagh was drinking when he tapped Kan'ya for Much Ado About Nothing. Anyway, K-boy drags this movie down in a big way and it wasn't even that far up there to begin with.

i will raise a glass to Blake Lively, however, who has a richer role here than in Gossip Girl and doesn't disappoint. Another drink to Alan Arkin who is like good whiskey: the older he gets, the better he is.

The other thing i liked was how much smoking there was in this movie. Pippa (Robin Wright Penn) and Young Pippa (Blake Lively) both smoke Marlboro Lights and there's something about close-ups of a girl smoking that really flare my hot box. The only minor disappointment was that Blake Lively is obviously not a smoker and was just going through the motions. A real smoker can tell.

As for the rest of the movie: it's slow, uneven and doesn't end at the right time. That's Life.

Buzz Kills (Watch Out for Spoilers)

Sex: 2½ Shots

i gotta give it something considering the sheer quantity of female glory that strolls through this thing...

Ironically, the only nude scene isn't the hottest part of the movie. It's by Christin Sawyer Davis who plays Shelly, Julianne Moore's lesbian lover. She undresses before getting into a sexy photo shoot (think Blake Lively in a pony tail and frilly diaper pretending to be a baby in a playpen or wearing a French maid's outfit with a leash). Here's a scene with Shelly spanking Young Pippa (Blake Lively):

Julianne Moore isn't in the film long but rocks as Kat, Pippa's aunt's lover. There is a nice girl/girl kiss between Kat (Moore) and Aunt Trish (Robin Weigert). The other nice part is that Kat never wears a bra and struts around the apartment in a tight knit thingy (ask a woman if you names for clothes). Kinda like this:

My other beautiful surprise in this film was seeing Winona Ryder again. Sure, she had a brief appearance in Star Trek (2009) but that was just a teaser to remind me of the days my cousin and i walked around singing (to the tune of "My Sharona"): Na na nanana Na Na nanana Na Na nanana My Winona!

Anyway, i was thrilled to see how truly beautiful she is, but even more, to see how excellent her performance was as Pippa's friend, Sandra. She was truly the funniest and most fun thing about the movie. Here are some shots of our little girl growing up:

Coming back to Blake Lively...

S'all Right, Babe. i Got Your Back.

The movie stars Robin Wright Penn:

Finally, there was a surprise appearance by Monica Bellucci as Herb Lee's wife, Gigi Lee. Her role was short but she looked good filling it. Here's what i mean:

For Brandi Alexandra and any other women who have wandered into the bar...

A Smoke

Drink: 2 Shots

A quick 'rum through' of the notes i scribbled during the movie:
  • The movie starts with a red wine toast at dinner to an editor and his wife, Pippa Lee.
  • A bottle of red as a present at a party.
  • Vodka martinis at a party.
  • Young Pippa does cartwheels on the beach and hits from a wine bottle (red).
  • Champagne at the divorce meeting and a drink to 'transformation'.

A Smoke

Rock & Roll: 0 Shots

There's a song that young Pippa dances to in her room while on speed and i think it's "Still To Be Painted" by Pitcher's Pony but i can't find the song or confirmation.

There's a Dusty Springfield song ("I'll Love You For A While") but i can't scrape that up either.

Lucinda Williams' "I Lost It", rolls during the credits.

Boring Technical Crap

Robin Wright Penn - Pippa Lee

Blake Lively - Young Pippa

Winona Ryder - Sandra Dulles

Julianne Moore - Kit

Monica Bellucci - Gigi Lee

Bottom Line

Don't see it, not even to score 'Chick Flick' points because chances are she won't like it either.
